Orca Behavior

Join us for the last Enlightening Minds talk of the fall! Monika Wieland Shield’s life-long love of animals has always included orcas. She’s been observing and studying Southern Residents and Bigg’s whales since the early 2000’s. In 2015, she co-founded the Orca Behavior Institute with the belief that community scientists could collect important data to document changing whale behavior in the Salish Sea. The primary goal of the Orca Behavior Institute is to collect long-term data sets documenting changes in whale behavior in the Salish Sea to help inform the protection of Bigg’s whales and the recovery of Southern Residents.
