History of the Kids Carnival
Founded in 1993, the Harstine Island Kids Carnival was the brainchild of BJ and Joe Beauchene, Pat LeClair, and Jerry Christiansen. Pat, then the women’s club president, and BJ worked to gather donations from area businesses including hot dogs, soda, and popcorn. The two couples, as well as other community members, designed and made the games. Prizes were purchased and tickets were sold at a modest price. The carnival was not created as a fund raiser, but rather as a gift to the children of the community.
Shirl Conway Larson and Whickey Hopkins coordinated clowns for the event. Many island children who were clowns and participants in the early years, are now parents themselves who bring their children to the event.
Women’s club members and their husbands setup the games and staff the event. Only missing two years (2020 and 2021) due to the COVID pandemic, it has been an extremely successful event with much happiness.
