Garden Dedication at the Pioneer School District

The newly dedicated Eagles’ Garden welcomed families on June 7th. K-8 students toured their parents around the garden that they helped build with the support of the Harstine Island Garden Club (HIGC). During this first year back after COVID had closed schools, the students actively built garden beds and paths; shoveled piles of soil and woodchips; direct sowed cool season crops and potted up warm season basil, peppers, and tomatoes; cared for the garden; and were able to pick and eat the harvests of their labor! In addition to proudly showing family and friends the results of their efforts, they were able to participate in activities provided by the HIGC: rock painting, flavored-water tasting, and taking home a potted plant. It was a fun evening for all thanks to the hard work of the Pioneer School District staff, the HIGC members, and support from the community.

The Odd Couple

Description

We are all familiar with Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple”. Well, now it’s the ladies turn. Olive Madison and Florence Unger, two polar opposite personalities, become roommates – one a carefree slob, one an uptight neurotic – and hilarity ensues. Six women, who have been friends forever, get together every Friday night for games, currently it is Trivial Pursuit (it is the 80’s after all). Florence is late and everyone is concerned. They soon discover that her marriage has broken down, she has left her husband and is on the verge of suicide. Sounds dreadful, but this is Neil Simon, so humor, one-liners, and belly laughs are along for the ride. Three weeks into the arrangement Olive is going a little stir crazy and convinces Florence to have dinner with two brothers from Spain who live in the building. Needless to say, the evening doesn’t go as planned.

Cast

Olive is played by DeeAnn Meacham, a Theatre Club veteran most recently seen as The Toy Fairy in “The Velveteen Rabbit”, and Ida in “The Cemetery Club”. Newcomer, Lucinda Wiita, portrays Florence. Lucinda comes to us with loads of experience as both a teacher and performer. We round out the cast with Liz Brunner as Sylvie, Sheryl Fellman as Mickey, Pam Mueller as Renee, and Anita Chandler as Vera. The Costazuela brothers are played by Mike Benson and Monty Cobb. Barb Hubbard is directing with assistance from Anne Strathairn.

When

Performances are 7:30 PM on June 24, July 1, and 2, 2022 and 3:00 PM on June 25, 26, and July 3, 2022.
